If you have a website, you need traffic.
You may be asking: what do you mean by "traffic". I'm glad you asked. Website traffic refers to people checking out your site. Consider the possibility of laying out the investment to build a website, and thousands of dollars later, you have nice-looking site that no one knows about and thereby not earning you money. You may as well put a McDonald's smack-dab in the middle of Death Valley.
There are many ways to get traffic. If you need traffic fast, there are two basic methods you can use.
The first method you should consider is borrowing traffic. If at first you're unsure if this method will work for you, please carefully consider it because it can be a very powerful means for getting new leads. The basic idea is for another website owner to suggest that his or her readers look at your offer. Generally, you will need to pay a commission or referral fee to encourage this action on the part of the website owner.
This method works for at least two reasons. First, someone else has gone to the trouble of identifying people interested in a particular topic, saving you the time and expense of locating the same. Second, you are "borrowing" the credibility of the person who refers people to you. Think about this for a minute. When making a buying decision, whether for a film, restaurant, or clothing store, do you rely more upon traditional advertising or do you prefer to get recommendations from friends and trusted acquaintances? The answer for most is the latter.
If you borrow traffic as described above, it will likely not cost money upfront, though in most cases you will pay a percentage of sales to the referrer.
Next, consider paid advertising. Your options for paid advertising are many, and at the top of your list should be pay-per-click advertising. Google and their Adwords program is where you should begin, and before long, take a look at Yahoo and MSN. The largest benefit to pay-per-click advertising is it allows you to restrict who sees your ads; in this case, only those people who type specific words into the search engine will see the ad.
Pay-per-click advertising is effective for many reasons. One reason is that you can match exactly what people are searching for. Additionally, pay-per-click advertising can be tracked. As an example, Google can identify which keywords generated the most "clicks" and using their conversion tracker, you can also determine which specific keywords led to a sales conversion.
Unlike the "borrowing traffic" method, you will have a cash outlay whether you make sales or not. On the plus side, Google will likely not charge your credit card until the end of the month, so you may actually have generated more than enough in sales to pay your Adwords bill when it is time to pay. When you first start, most people keep close tabs on their Adwords account, to make sure they are not spending more than they had planned.
These are only two methods of getting traffic to your website. Future articles will reveal many more methods.
