Why do people steal from vending machines? There are all sorts of reasons from just thinking it really isn't stealing to looking for an easy way to get their hands on some cash. While there is quite a difference between getting a soda for free and walking off with all the merchandise and money, both are forms of stealing from a vending machine. Both of them will end up costing the owner of it money in the long run.
People of all ages seem to think it is acceptable to steal from vending machines. Some young children learn this behavior from their parents. Others engage in it with their friends and there are adults out there that are just as guilty of it. I think it is ironic that the majority of these people will tell you they personally think it is wrong to steal. They just don't see what they are doing at the vending machine as stealing.
Just because there isn't a person around to make you responsible for your actions doesn't make it right. Many vending machine owners are tired of getting ripped off. You may be on a hidden surveillance camera and therefore someone is watching your actions. Too many people try to convince themselves that stealing from a vending machine is no big deal. Yet if you have to talk yourself into it that way you really need to walk away from the urge to do so.
For others, it really depends on what you mean by stealing from a vending machine. It could be on a small scale as I just mentioned. Some people know how to tilt a vending machine to get it to drop double for them every time. Others are more calculated in their efforts. They use tokens or they use coins on a string so that they never end up paying for what they get from the vending machine.
These may be minor offenses, but still theft nonetheless. For the owners of vending machines, the real damage comes when people are stealing what is inside of them. They generally don't have a way in but to break the machine apart. This can cost a great deal of money to repair. In some instances the vending machine must be replaced due to the amount of damage.
The items that are for sale aren't all they take though. They will take all of the money that has been collected. This can be quite a bit if the vending machine is just about ready to be refilled again. An experienced thief is going to know when that is too and then hit it in the day or two before. They know this is the best way to maximize the amount of money they will find inside of it.
Some individuals go the full distance when it comes from stealing from a vending machine. They take the entire machine and run with it. They may show up at night with a truck and be gone with it. They can take the merchandise, the money, and they often profit from selling the vending machine as well.
There are many reasons why people steal from vending machines. Even though some of them tend to be socially acceptable, non of them are right. You wouldn't want someone taking things that belong to you. It doesn't matter what the cost involved is so don't kid yourself that no harm has been done. Those that are trying to make a living with a vending machine business are feeling the burden of your actions.
