Are You Prepared For Someone Choking In Your Restaurant?

by PatriciaFarnham

Do you know how to help someone who is choking in your restaurant? It is amazing how many people own and operate a very successful business that serves food yet they aren't trained in this area. It only takes a second for this type of incident to take place in such a business. Don't wait until you have had to helplessly stand by before decide to learn these types of procedures.

A person who is choking is in jeopardy or not being able to breathe at all. This can result in brain damage due to a lack of oxygen or even death. There is no guarantee that other staff or even other customers will know what to do when someone is choking. Even most parents don't know what to do for their children in such instances. Time isn't something you have to waste when someone is choking so make sure you can jump right in to help them.

Set a good example for your restaurant by knowing how to help those that may be choking. It isn't something that is mandated but something you will feel good about being able to do. The last think you want to do is feel completely helpless when one of your dining guests is in such trouble. Think about other responsible staff that can also perform such procedures should you not be around.

Check around locally and you should be able to find plenty of first aid classes to teach you about it. They may be offered during they day, at night, or on the weekend so you can be sure you will be able to find one that accommodates your schedule. If there is a cost to attend the class it won't be very much. Generally that cost is only to pay for your book that you get to keep.

Approach the staff that you would like to attend this type of training as well. Your long term employees as well as managers should be a part of it. Let them know that you will be covering the cost of paying for their materials. You also need to pay them wages for the time they spend in the class. This will generally be a day or two depending on the program. You can write all of it off as a business expect for your taxes as well.

There are different techniques to use for helping an adult and a very young child who is choking. Make sure that the program you take offers the procedures for both groups. With severe choking incidents, the individual may also require CPR after the object has been removed. With this in mind you need to make sure the course you take also covers the process of giving CPR correctly.

The best types of first aid classes to learn with are those that have classroom educators as well as books you can refer back to later. They also have life like mannequins that you can practice on. This way you can be confident you know exactly how to handle the chocking victim. Some people are very panicked when this occurs and they need to know you are calm. There are also follow up courses you can take to refresh your skills in the future as well.

Take some time to learn what you can do to help anyone choking at your restaurant. You don't want to have to rely upon others to take care of such an important manner. You also need to realize that you can use these skills anywhere so they really will be of benefit to you. Try to take a refresher course every couple of years. This way the material will stay fresh in your mind. It only takes needing to know what to do once for it to all be worth the effort you put into it.
